Escalating Gang Clashes Fuel Fear in Katsina Communities

Residents of parts of Katsina are living in fear following a surge in violent clashes between rival youth gangs, commonly known as ‘yan daba’, in recent days.

The violence, which has affected neighbourhoods such as Inwala and Shararrar Pipes, has reportedly left at least three people dead over the past week. Among the victims was a local musician, Abubakar, popularly known as “Abu Amshi,” whom residents say had no known involvement in gang activities.

Eyewitnesses told KatsinaTimes that he was attacked and killed in what they described as a brutal assault allegedly carried out by suspected gang members, further heightening tensions in the affected communities.

Community sources linked the renewed violence to a dispute involving a suspected gang member identified as “Mado.” The disagreement, reportedly connected to the purchase of a dog from Asaba in Delta State, is believed to have reignited a longstanding rivalry between youth groups in Inwala and Shararrar Pipes.

Tensions escalated on Tuesday, March 24, when suspected gang members allegedly issued threats of an impending attack on Inwala. The threat triggered panic across both neighbourhoods, forcing many residents to remain indoors and shut down their businesses shortly after evening prayers.

“Once we heard about the threat, everyone went home and locked up. People are scared because anything can happen,” a resident said.

Similar threats were also reported in Shararrar Pipes, leaving both communities in a state of heightened anxiety amid fears of further violence.

At the time of filing this report, the situation remains tense, with residents expressing concern over the possibility of additional casualties.

Residents have called on the Katsina State Government and security agencies to take urgent action to restore order and safeguard lives and property. They also appealed to Governor Dikko Umar Radda to fast-track road construction projects in the affected areas.

According to locals, poor road networks and densely built environments provide safe havens for criminal elements, making it difficult for security operatives to respond effectively.

“The lack of proper roads gives these criminals an advantage. If roads are constructed, security will improve,” another resident said.

The state government had earlier proposed urban renewal initiatives, including the redevelopment of congested neighbourhoods to create accessible road networks—measures many believe could help curb criminal activity and improve security in Katsina.

As of press time, security agencies have not issued an official statement regarding the reported threats or the potential for further clashes.
